Reps Set To change the 1999 Constitution To Increase Qualification For Presidency
A bill to raise the minimum academic qualifications for Nigeria's President and other political offices, has passed its second perusing in the House of Representatives without banter.
The bill sponsored by Adewunmi Onanuga (APC, Ogun), targets changing the 1999 Constitution by raising the qualification from a secondary school certificate to a bachelor degree or its same.
The bill proposes to modify the 1999 Constitution's Sections 65, 106, 131, and 171.
Onanuga, who led the discussion on the bill, expressed that a secondary school certificate is Insufficient for running the country.
"It's odd that a candidate should have a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate to be considered for a position in Nigeria's public service's senior cadre" she said.
She asked why the qualification for somebody who needs to control 'an entire nation' will be expected to introduce at least a senior school certificate or its equivalent.
