Kogi’s Ajaokuta Economic City Earns Free Trade Zone Status, Gov. Ododo Receives Certificate

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has officially been handed the Declaration Certificate for the Ajaokuta Economic City as a Free Trade Zone, following the Federal Government’s approval. The certificate was presented by Olufemi Ogunyemi, Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), at a brief ceremony in Lokoja on Thursday.

The designation marks the start of full‑scale operations at the Ajaokuta Economic City, a project positioned to become a hub for manufacturing, logistics, and export‑oriented businesses. Officials say the free‑trade status will unlock tax incentives, simplify customs procedures, and attract both local and foreign investors.

“This is a game‑changer for Kogi and for Nigeria,” Governor Ododo said. “The Ajaokuta Economic City will generate thousands of jobs, stimulate industrial growth, and diversify our economy beyond oil.”

NEPZA’s Ogunyemi added that the authority will work closely with state officials to ensure infrastructure, power, and regulatory support are in place, enabling rapid development of the zone.

Stakeholders from the private sector, traditional rulers, and community leaders attended the event, expressing optimism that the free‑trade zone will transform Ajaokuta into a regional economic powerhouse.
