A landmark court judgment delivered today has mandated the establishment of two new state constituencies, Ihima and Eika district within Okehi Local Government Area. The ruling, hailed as a “landmark victory” by community leaders, means Okehi will now send two separate members to the Kogi State House of Assembly, one each from Ihima and Eika districts.
The decision follows years of advocacy for fair representation, with local stakeholders arguing that the current single‑seat arrangement under‑represents the area’s growing population. By creating distinct constituencies, the court aims to bring governance closer to the people and ensure that both districts have a direct voice in state legislation.
Residents gathered at the Okehi council secretariat to celebrate, waving banners and chanting “Two seats, one future!” Political analysts say the move could reshape local politics, prompting parties to field candidates from each district and potentially boosting voter turnout in upcoming elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to begin the delimitation process shortly, in line with constitutional provisions on constituency creation. Officials have urged all stakeholders to cooperate for a smooth transition and to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
