 Iran Announce Ayatollah Alireza Arafi As The Acting Supreme Leader Of Iran.

Less than 24hours after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli airstrike that happened on February 28, 2026, Iran appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as the interim Supreme Leader.

Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, is a  67-year-old senior cleric, who has decades of experience from the Guardian Council and Al-Mustafa International University.

The appointment includes President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, as part of an interim leadership council, tasked with running the affairs of the country before a permanent successor is chosen by the Assembly of Experts. 

Arafi is seen as a connection between traditional religious authority and the modern bureaucratic state, as he is a member of the Guardian Council and head of Iran's national network of Islamic seminaries.

The transition marks a critical juncture for Iran, with Arafi facing the challenge of maintaining internal cohesion amidst intense geopolitical pressures. His leadership will be closely watched, given the country's history of turmoil and the current regional tensions.
