What was intended to be a strategic mobilization rally for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid turned into a scene of pandemonium on Tuesday, as angry residents descended on the "City Boy Movement" event in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The rally, organized to drum up support for the President’s future political ambitions, was cut short when a mob of frustrated citizens stormed the venue. Witnesses report that the atmosphere shifted from political advocacy to open hostility within minutes of the event’s commencement.
The "City Boy Movement," a prominent support group for the President, had gathered at a designated venue in the heart of Owerri. The organizers had prepared a significant cache of empowerment materials, including sewing machines, grinding machines, and food items, intended for distribution to loyalists.
However, before the official ceremonies could begin, a large crowd of residents reportedly agitated by the current economic hardship invaded the premises.
The crowd bypassed security measures, shouting slogans expressing dissatisfaction with the current cost of living.
In the ensuing scramble, the empowerment items meant for supporters were carted away by the residents.
