Veteran journalist Babajide Otitoju hasn’t held back in his assessment of presidential aide Daniel Bwala’s recent media appearance, labeling the encounter with renowned interviewer Mehdi Hasan a "brutal assault" and "mental torture" for the audience.
Speaking on the TVC News program Issues With Jide, Otitoju dissected what he described as a massive tactical blunder by the presidential aide.
According to Otitoju, Bwala walked into a trap of his own making. Instead of approaching the interview with caution, the aide actively promoted the session to his followers, even praising Hasan’s fearsome reputation as a broadcast journalist.
Bwala publicly signaled the interview's arrival, seemingly confident in his ability to defend the administration.
Otitoju noted that Hasan is globally recognized as one of the most aggressive and prepared debaters in journalism, a "style of questioning" Bwala was clearly not ready for.
He made a big mistake going head-to-head with Mehdi Hasan. He should have known he would not come out unscathed," Otitoju remarked.
The critique focused on how quickly the interview spiraled out of Bwala's control. Rather than selling the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bwala found himself pinned down by his own history.
Otitoju argued that the appearance was a total loss for the government's communication strategy. By allowing Hasan to use his past comments against him, Bwala was unable to pivot to the administration's performance or achievements.
"It was a brutal assault, he failed to achieve his objective," Otitoju concluded, suggesting that the aide’s attempt to play in the big leagues of international media backfired spectacularly.
