Uncovering the Truth: PDP Demand for Transparency in the 2024 Budget

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is demanding that Senate President Godswill Akpabio step aside in order to conduct an independent investigation into how 3.7 trillion naira was covertly inserted into the 2024 budget for nonexistent projects. The PDP has thrown its support behind Senator Abdul Ngigi, the chairman of the Northern Senator Forum, who is currently suspended.

In addition, the party demands that Senator Godswill Akpabio step aside for an independent investigation into how 3.7 trillion naira was covertly padded into the 2024 budget for nonexistent projects. 

This was said in a speech release that Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the national publicity secretary, signed. The PDP is requesting that the Senate President address the alleged N86B contract scam that occurred in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) while he served as the Niger Delta Affairs Minister.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership suspended Senator Abdul Ngigi from the Senate without conducting a thorough investigation into the budget padding matter that Ngigi brought up. The Peoples Democratic Party strongly opposes this action. 

It appears that Ngigi's suspension is a desperate attempt to stifle the investigation, hide the truth, and ignore it.

Furthermore, the Senate APC leadership's frustration with the investigation validates PDP's repeated warnings that ministers and other government employees have been used by top APC officials in the National Assembly and the presidency to embezzle funds from the national budget.

We question why, in accordance with the Senate's current procedures, the APC leadership in the Senate failed to refer the issue to the relevant standing committee for an open investigation. What is the APC leadership in the Senate fearing and hiding from the Nigerians?

The Senate president's decision to sit in as a judge in this case, rather than recusing himself, is even more ludicrous and might further damage the Senate's credibility among the people.

This is especially true given that the topics at hand primarily include criminal violation of the public trust and alleged egregious misbehavior, both of which are considered significant felonies under our legal system.

Nigerians now understand why the All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership in the National Assembly, particularly in the Senate, still supports the unchecked embezzlement of public funds intended for palliative care for the nation's impoverished and vulnerable residents.

This apparent inclination towards covering up sleaze in the polity is already pitching the institution of the Senate against Nigerians who are demanding for answers on the matter. Of course, the widely condemned suspension of senator Ngigi does not provide answers to the budget padding allegations.

It is indeed unfortunate and a huge smear on the image of the senate, as the highest lawmaking and probity institution in the country, that bits presiding officer has found himself in a quagmire or alleged sleaze and betrayal of public trust.

As a result, our party supports Senator Abdul Ngigi for his bravery in pursuing accountability and probity in the political system.

Nigerians currently expect the Senate President to come clean by resigning, granting an independent probe into the allegations of budget padding, and clearing his name before the EFCC regarding the theft of N108 billion and N86 billion, respectively, while he was the governor of Akwa Ibom state and the minister of Niger Delta affairs.
